When a child believes he is bad, he behaves badly—and parents react badly, which will only reinforce the child's belief that he is bad. But confident parents can break this cycle and improve their child's misbehavior, says child development specialist Bonnie Harris. Using Harris's eight parenting principles designed to help children succeed, parents will learn the following truths
my child wants to be successful
behavior is the signal to my child's emotional state
inappropriate behavior means my child is having a problem, not being a problem
my needs are no more or no less important than my child's
I accept my child as a competent and unique individual
the behavior I focus on grows
I need to say what my child can hear
good discipline requires connection
punishment breaks connection
Putting these principles to work allows parents to abandon the typical reward and punishment system of discipline (which alienates child and parent), and replace it with a more compassionate, successful approach that brings parent and child together. With Harris's plan, parents will gain the confidence and skills to raise remarkable kids they will love to live with—and vice versa.

Confident Parents, Remarkable Kids 8 Principles for Raising Kids You’ll Love to Live With eBook Bonnie Harris Reviews
A little tough and unable to accept some very disrespectful behavior, but also helpful to remind one to compassionate and to see things from the child's point of view, and to recognize the child's still limited ability to express themselves in socially acceptable ways (they're still learning and our job is to help them).
Great Book!
I highly recommend this book for any parent that is dealing with a strong-willed child or is stuck in daily power struggles with their children. Here are some nuggets from the book
The most important thing we can do as parents is connect with our children.
You cannot control your child's behavior but you can 100% control your own.
It is not our job to make our kids happy.
The behavior in your child that you focus on the most only grows.
Problem solving techniques are much more effective long term than punishment
Children hate to be punished and most parents hate to punish their children
When I slow down and have the patience to communicate with my children the way Harris describes, we have wonderful outcomes! (tears, anger, disrespect, etc..... are all alleviated so much quicker; and my children share so much more about their day withe me). It is very eye-opening and rewarding to really explore the reasons they respond the way they do in certain situations. I wish I had read this book years ago.
I love this book for the simple reason that the author explains that parents are not responsible for their child's behavior and that every child is born for success. This book opens lines of communication between the parent and the child without having to yell or punish your children with time outs, or grounding. It explains to parents how important it is for your child to make choices, to negotiate and to problem solve...all the things that your child will have to do for himself/herself in everyday life. I am so happy that I have found it!
I recommend this book to every parent who faces struggles with their kids (no matter what age). Far beyond "gimmicks" and "tricks" that many parenting books present, Bonnie Harris offers solid ideas on working with your children that stand the test of time. You create methods for how to interact with your kids that you will use today and years from now. The ideas discussed will usher in a deep and lasting relationship with your children and will likely positively affect all of the relationships in your life.
Parents... do you want more JOY, HARMONY, and FUN with your children and less DRAMA and TEARS? I highly recommend this book and "When Children Push our Buttons" for all parents. Parenting is one of the most important privileges in life!!!! Many of us learned our parenting skills from our parents. But old parenting techniques (taking things away, punishment, "do it because I said so!!!" ) do not seem to work. Connective Parenting helps parents gain insight into what is really going in the mind of a child and in the mind of the parent. Bonnie Harris provides logical explanations and tangible useful strategies which can help reduce daily battles, tears, and drama. Connective Parenting ROCKS and so does Bonnie Harris!
I have found I have needed a lot of help with parenting, and nothing has resonated with me like Bonnie Harris's Connective Parenting approach. I find her to be very real, and whilst I'm not from the US (I'm from Australia), it seems from knowledge and experience relayed in her books, REAL parenting problems are pretty much the same world wide. I feel I can relate to her books, and approach, more than anyone elses. And her approach is based on kindness and compassion - also with yourself as the parent. Her approach is the only one that has made me feel comfortable and OK as parent, which in turn helps me to improve. After four years of practising her principals, my parenting life has improved, as has my life in general. Quite a few parenting books have been purchased in the past, read once, and sat on the shelf collecting dust - however Confident Parents, Remarkable Kids, along with Bonnie's other book When Your Kids Push Your Buttons have become "bibles" for me, and are never far away for regular reference and review!!
